Welcome to the Dekalog sub-forum!

Our very own guttersnipe will be reviewing this critically acclaimed Polish series of 10 short films.

Huzzah!

Mike, I believe that's a typo. It should say "polished series of 10 short -"

Wait a sec. The series is in Polish?! Don't you guys remember my issues with subtitles?

(Yeah, I know. It's not all about me.)

And I thought it would be hard enough to catch up with The West Wing and The Inside. *sigh.

But actually this seems like an interesting series to look at. Will probably check it out when I've got room to spare.

MJ has issues with subtitles too. Me, a lot of my viewing is foreign language anyway, but I read super fast.

Anyway, yeah, it was something we had been talking about in the back channels, and SUPPLIES! Welcome to the team, guttersnipe.

The Decalogue comments trivia on IMDB

"Director Stanley Kubrick described 'Dekalog' as the only masterpiece he could name in his lifetime."

Well that's enough praise for me. I'm in!

As a slow reader subtitles certainly aren't ideal, but I've grown to deal with them. :)

I'll check it out when I get back to the States. Sounds cool, and my goal is to watch everything that's reviewed here anyway.

Ok, was that a reference to Weird Al's UHF?

Yep. In a post welcoming a serious show making serious artistic choices, I referenced UHF.

Hey everyone! :D

I'm just about to release the first review, and in the "Reviews" thread I'm going to invite you all to watch the first episode online! Thanks for the well-wishes, folks.

Wow. Never heard of this. But should be interesting.

As for subtitles: all foreign-language TV in the Netherlands is sub-titled, so I'm used to reading them ever since I was 9 years old. Reading speed obviously is of no concern.

But for me, fast reading is actually what makes subtitles worse than being able to understand the language: you will read the punchline before the joke is made, you will read the reply before the question is finished. So the timing is off.

The second issue is that the subtitles are often a] truncated, because the full translation wouldn't fit on the screen and b] translated poorly. Of course, the last problem can also apply to dubs. Pretty much unavoidable with translations in general.

Still, you get used to them quickly. At this point, if I pause an English-language show, I'm often unsure whether it has subtitles or not before I resume. I don't consciously notice them anymore, most of the time.

I just think it's weird that I should be prompted to watch a foreign-language series in the exact same week that the first episode of Borgen is finally accessible online here in the USA.

It's like the universe is saying, "Let's force Jeremy to watch a whole bunch of shows in foreign languages all at the same time!"

Quit messing with my head, universe!

(Yeah, yeah. Still not all about me.)

Never would have heard of this if it didn't pop up here. I'm intrigued. I also like subtitles; it's impossible to capture the emotion of the moment with dubs, no matter how good the dubbing is (and it's usually of questionable quality). I probably benefit from being a fast reader; I'll typically glance at the subtitles so as to understand the context, and then watch the actors speak so as to miss as little of the performance as possible.

Re: subs, none of the episodes feature heavy amounts of dialogue, in fact there are frequent large pockets of near-silence.

*way to pimp the show*
